I'd go with the Garmin eTrex too. To me those are like throw away GPSs. Cheap enough that you can use them and if you lose or break them then you won't be crying so much because you lost a bunch of money on it!

Garmin makes some great handhelds for super cheap.
They are the yellow Etrex model and they will do what you want them to do just fine.
You can find them for really cheap, like 80 or 90 bucks on Amazon.com

There aren't any!!!

But if you search on the internet there are repositories for "speed trap POIs" that are user maintained. Having the Speed Trap POIs handy will help you avoid the speed traps set out by the police.

You may also be interested in the Red Light Camera POIs for when you blow the red lights too!

I was gonna get a TomTom but you have to have an account with them to get traffic updates and stuff. I wasn't planning on creating an account with them. Whats the best GPS to have any way, and is there one you don't have to have an account with?

The iPhone 1 does not have GPS - it has some software that does some locating based on cellular towers and WiFi connection. The iPhone 2 actually has "Assisted GPS" which means that it has special hardware that gives it some enhanced locating features while on a cellular network.

I'm thinking of setting up profiles so that registered users can share their GPS tracks with other people.

It would use Google Earth for mapping data and you'd make the presentation in Google and then upload your KML file.

Any interest in this?

I call Mexico "Un pais de esperando" or "a country of waiting" because everything takes so long to do here.

As an open question: If you plan to get the iPhone share with us what service plan you'll be getting, the plan details and which country you're in.

Iphone 1 doesn't have GPS. I believe the iPhone 2 has different hardware in order for it to be enabled. In addition it will run Firmware 2. The same firmware will be available for download on July 11 for the iPhone 1 but I don't think GPS will work. I might be wrong. I guess we will find our soon.

My job brings me way out into places that have no roads or easy access. I take samples of the rock and soil and mark them with my GPS. If I see interesting geological structures I make not of their location and later on I map all of my findings and am able to share them with other people (like my boss).

I use a really easy program to keep all the information in too - Google Earth - and it works great.

I use software called GPSMeter PE (the professional edition) from Maspware. It's really good software and they have done a lot of updates for it in the last little while correcting some of the problems it had.

GPSMeter is not NAVIGATIONAL software though but for what I use it for it is perfect.

Not sure about sharing maps because most of them are copyright. You can however go to http://openstreetmap.org and participate in helping build a fully public domain set of streetmaps for your area.

It's easy to do and will help public domain projects.

I actually have a Trimble Juno ST and it is great. It is very accurate but I really wish that it would have at least a 2 megapixel camera in it and cellular capabilities of some sort.

It runs the Windows Mobile OS which is actually really good for mobile devices and I can choose what kind of GPS software I want to use on it.

So if it had the camera and phone it would be an almost perfect device!
