Save Money With Free GPS POIs

There’s a lot of interest in freely available Points Of Interest files that people can load on or update their GPS with.

Lucky for all of us the Internet is a great place where people share and compile information for the benefit of all of us. The people over at The POI Factory have put together a whole bunch of information and compiled it into downloadable POI files. They’ve done a great job and really have a lot to offer - for FREE!

So if you’ve been tramping around the internet looking for these hard to find files you don’t have to look any further - head over to The POI Factory and grab a few files.

Drive safe and don’t forget to grab the Red-Light and Speed Trap POIs - might even save you some MORE money.

Real Sense of Raw GPS Data

I’m writing this as a way to keep track of my thoughts while trying to solve a problem. You may not find this at all interesting but since it has to do with GPS data I thought that I would post it on my blog. If you decide to write or comment about this and expect any type of reply please ask relevant questions. Please also remember that I am not obligated to reply back to you and will do so only if I feel like it. (more…)

Changing and Creating TomTom Voices

You’ve had your TomTom for awhile now and that navigational voice is starting to get on your nerves - making your driving experience less than enjoyable and filling you full of the dreaded symptom known as Road Rage.

Free GPS Tracking Service and Software

Quoox GPS Tracker is a free service to live-track any kind of GPS device. The only thing needed is a device which has the capability to upload its’ current GPS data to the Quoox Tracker Service.

The tracking service at this time supports the Pocket PC 2003/SE, Windows Mobile 5 and the Windows Mobile 6 operating systems with their own software or you can purchase a copy of the MaspWare GPSMeter program (3rd party).

The service is completely free for private use and it’s also really easy to use. Just register your own unique tracker id, it’s almost as simple as that. Use any client software with you device and start tracking!

When everything is up and running you can track the position of the GPS device using a simple and familiar Google Earth Web Interface on the Quoox Web Site.

Google Earth Free vs Plus

Google Earth is a great application even if you don’t use a GPS device with it. You can look at the landscape and explore the world with a birds-eye view of some excellent and very current earth imagery.

I decided that since I use the application a lot that I would upgrade to the Plus version of Google Earth which has a price-tag of a reasonable $20 annually.

Since my GPS is not of the Magellan or Garmin brands I can’t do the real time GPS tracking that Google Earth Plus would allow me to do. I really don’t have the need to do this real-time tracking on Google Earth, but it would probably be fun to play around with for an hour or two. I’m totally satisfied with importing my data and storing it for later use. (more…)
