Help the World with a GPS and OpenStreetMap

If you own a GPS device there’s a great way that you can help the world and have some fun doing it too.

There’s still a lot of roads out there in the world that aren’t easily available on the internet these days and you can help get them available. You’d think that having all the roads in the world mapped and available on the internet is something that just happens by itself but it seems to not be the case.

It’s no surprise that the USA is the most active part of the map, but most developed countries have a lot of their roads available. When it comes to somewhere even as close as Mexico – route information is lacking and hard to find.

Sometimes people want to plan a trip a little better and knowing that a route exists is half the battle plan.

You can help by logging some of your excursions – if your a world traveller that gets off the beaten path once in awhile it’s even better because it’s most likely that your information will be something that’s not readily available yet.

The guys that set up a site in 2004 using a “Wiki-Like” form that allows people to share and update their track and route information are called OpenStreetMap. It’s really easy to create an account and start sharing your information with the world too.

You’ll probably find a program called GPSBabel will be a lot of help when it comes to changing your GPS data into the GPX format required by OpenStreetMap for sharing on the site.
