I’ve noticed a lot of people on the internet that are looking to find their lost cell phone with GPS capability or their GPSs that might have been stolen out of their car.
Since there’s so much interest in this subject I though that I would just let all those that are interest to know - that there is no way to track a stolen GPS.
A GPS receives signals from satellites (there are about 31 available at this time with at least 24 needed for full global coverage) which tell the GPS device the position of the satellite. The satellites have no idea how many GPS devices are listening or receiving the signal. The satellite is totally blind. Just like a radio station tower - all of the information flows freely through the air just looking to be caught by someone.
The GPS device receives the satellite identification information and the location of the satellite at that time, it does a bunch of calculations and then tells you where you are.
This whole process works the same with GPS enabled cellular phones. The GPS system is an additional piece of hardware and software that are built into the phone (just like MP3 capable phones).
I am almost certain that there are some providers now from which you can purchase a tracking service - but that service isn’t provided by default and must be specifically purchased.
All in all and to put things really short - if you lost your GPS you just have to go and buy a new one. If you lost your GPS enabled cellular phone - the chances are very slim that you will ever get it back.
Good luck and hold on tight to your goods!
